best of 2009...movies

{every day from now until december 31st i will be including a "best of 2009" post, with lists & thoughts galore about my favorites and best ofs the past year. check back in and feel free to share your related best of 2009 in the comments, or suggest a best of topic!}

today's topic: movies

this is going to be a short one...and this is why: i just didn't watch movies in 2009. i've wracked my brain and the only movies i saw in the theater this last year were the following: ghost of girlfriends past, bride wars, funny people and julie & julia.

(please don't cringe at the first two. so just maybe it is a tradition that my two former roommates and i take turns treating each other to the latest girlie movie. the key is to have low expectations for the actual film quality)

i really liked funny people. (it was a little on the long side, but a good movie)
i really like julie & julia. (i'd read as far as i could in the book the film is based on, but the author (who is played by amy adams in the movie) was super annoying & abrasive, so i put it down about 150 pages in. amy adams, although not as good as meryl streep, definitely redeemed julia, transforming her into a much more likable character.)

so.
tell me.
my list is too short
(i do love movies. it's just for some reason or another we haven't had space for movies this year. maybe it has something to do with watching the entire 5 seasons of the wire on dvd.)
and i need some tips!
what movies from 2009 should i watch?

  2. You should definitely see A Serious Man, it's the new Coen brothers film (they did No Country for Old Men, Burn After Reading, etc.)

    Also, I saw that amazing picture of Matt and Jeremy at Kim's yesterday. Did you paint it? It's gorgeous, although it does kinda look like it's Matt and Jeremy's house :)

  3. best action movies of '09: watchmen (just be careful of the peen in every other shot - but really good movie), wolverine, star trek, inglorious basterds (best movie of 2009 IMO)

    cry fests: up, time traveler's wife

    cry from laughing your A off: the proposal, the ugly truth

    I think my favorite movies in 2009 were Star Trek, Up, and Harry Potter. But I have tons on my list to still see:

    * An Education
    * The Blind Side
    * Up In The Air
    * Invictus
    * Avatar
    * Sherlock Holmes

  6. did you see star trek? way better than i thought it would be. also the blind side was the sleeper hit of the year for me. so so good. i heart sandra. and don't laugh, but we saw avatar this weekend and it's amazing. james cameron is king of the world. (2 scifi? who have i become?!) oh and man on a wire. was that this year or last? so good!

  7. Ok right, best movies of 2009..
    Well gotta start with Avatar since I saw it today, and it was GOOD. Also, umm District 9 was possibly the best film I've seen all year. Definately Transformers 2, but that's on the list with New Moon and Watchmen, depends on taste. Oh Star Trek was pretty amazing. And for drama, The Reader was good.
    And I'm gonna have to say worst films as well: Knowing, oh my goodness kill me now. Also, Paranormal Activity. Sorry but from all the hype it got, I was disappointed. Most hateable characters. And movie I missed but HAVE to see: Inglorious Basterds. (By the way these are all movies that came out this year, not movies I've watched because that list would be waaay too long.)

  8. A Serious Man by the Coen brothers

    Inglourious Bastards by Tarantino

    Coco Avante Chanel (or Coco before Chanel- it's a frenchie)

    The Reader is ridiculously intense (lots of sex, beautiful cinematography and a great acting).

    Up ...absolutely genius. I loved every second of it- and little M would love it too, of course!

    I could go on about the movies I wish I had seen and ones I wish I hadn't seen. I hope you enjoy these sometime...xoxo

  9. since you're preggars--Away We Go--it was pretty funny, and probably more so to those of us in the baby world.

    This is not from 2009...but the decades' best film is Best of Youth. 6 hour movie everyone has to see. It's Italian and soooo good!
