hi.
i am scrambling to finish some freelance deadlines & working in every spare moment that i can find, so i will have to neglect you (at least until tomorrow).
be kind today, and remember it is ok to hit the snooze button more than once on a monday morning just back from the holiday. (well, i think it's ok to hit the snooze button any day of the week...) unless you have a little munchkin, and it that case, snooze buttons no longer exist.
meanwhile, does anyone have specific suggestions for how to slow down, de-commercialize, and be intentional during this advent and christmas season? i don't want to get sucked in to all of the hub-bub and craziness...
xo,
me
"Be still and know that I am God."
ReplyDeleteFirst, don't set foot inside a mall between now and January 15. Second, give heifers -- Heifer International. I haven't quite gone that route yet, but I'm awfully close -- every year, as I stress out about picking out gifts, and then as I look at the huge pile of nice but totally unnecessary things that I am given, I swear that next year everyone gets a heifer. (Well, a heifer's a bit steep -- maybe a goat or chicken.) And more generally, just google "socially responsible gifts" and you can get all your shopping done online and with a much gladder heart. Then round out the season with hugs, laughter, and lots of cookies. That's my plan, anyway. (Okay, so I'm also ordering some stuff from Amazon, but my heart's in the right place, if not my credit card.)
ReplyDeleteHaving no money helps, can't even THINK about buying gifts, suddenly consumerism really looks stupid... and of course BE still and know that i am God is always a good one.
ReplyDeleteI come to this blog for ideas!!!

a friend just sent this to me a few days ago. Kind of similar to Be Still and Know that I am God, but with a twist:
ReplyDeleteSTOP, LOOK, LISTEN
The hardest part (for me) is the stopping. But, once you're there, great reminder to Look to see where God is working and then Listen to His voice
Nicola said it best! If you don't have any money, you realize that creative opportunities for celebration are everywhere around you! You can even enjoy a little dose of holiday Americana for free, Sarah and I volunteered for the Christmas parade to hold the giant floating Snoopy balloon. Nothing says "Merry Christmas Oakland!" like carrying a giant floating cartoon character down broadway.
ReplyDeleteThis year I'm giving gift baskets this year filled with all kinds of fun indulgences - Wine or Champagne from Trader Joe's, chocolates, salty chips with dip, nuts, dried fruit, ginger candies, fresh clementines and pears. I'll enclose a handmade card with a picture from the past year on it of the people I am giving the basket to - hopefully doing something they love and some fun glittered sticks and tissue flowers. I make cards, you make beautiful art... the card will inevitably be the favorite item in the basket... you should do something with you art. Maybe frame a special piece with a beautiful mat and a thoughtful note. Your friends and family will love anything you make so much more than something you buy! BTW...Papyrus! It's my "Alma Mater"! I started working there when I was 15 and stayed through law school... ahhh, it's home to me! I'm glad your work is going to be sol there!
