a princess with a pointy crown

when i was a little girl one of the things i remember is that i would make up songs around the house - while i was clearing the table, doing chores, playing; i made them up on the spot. of course i don't remember any of them, i doubt i'd have been able to sing them the next day even back then.

aside from the fact that my daughter is freaking deaf so it is already crazytime that she sings (thank you teacher karen for instilling a love of music and singing at all times  in her), i kind of love that she does the exact same thing i did as a child. she makes up songs ALL the time- some of them are short, some really, really long, and they often relate to her day, or a friend she is thinking about, or a job i've given her to do. she sings in her room, and on the toilet, and in the car, and when her implants are on or off. (she sounds a lot better when her implants are on!) it's a way she processes, but i kind of love that she does it through song.

i usually am in the middle of something when she's singing, but this morning i caught the end snippet of a long song she made up for her friend lily about friendship. (and apparently about being a princess too)

ok, ok, so she isn't going to win american idol or the voice or the x factor, but for a deaf kid she has pretty good pipes- am i right?

in the spirit of singing, does anyone have any good musical recommendations for me? i need some new music action in my life, especially when i'm working in my studio.

  1. Anything Lila Downs sings. (as long as you don't mind that most of her lyrics are Spanish or Nahuatl or Mixtec)
