getting back on the wagon

october felt like the month of sickness in our house- i went from a cold to a flu to a cold, and all of them knocked me out big time. it was as if a plague cloud settled over our house and just kept sprinkling new maladies down on me. in the midst of all of that sickness, i fell off my workout wagon and haven't exercised since. yep, it is now the end of november, and i still haven't worked out in a month and a half. i can tell from how i feel to the way my clothes are fitting, but i still have no motivation to start up again! does anyone else have that initial reluctance to get back in the swing of exercising? this month has been one where in some ways i feel like i've said yes to too many things, and have been juggling more than i really should, and so to add exercise back into the routine is daunting and overwhelming. thanks in great part to genetics, even when i work out pretty religiously my body type is not long and lean, so as soon as i take a break from exercise i almost immediately turn into a blob. fun times. if i had a stronger sense of self i would post a very unflattering photo that was in the pictures i just uploaded from my camera to prove my point, but i think i'll just keep that image to myself.

so gentle readers, i come to you with a two part question:
one, do you have any motivation for me? cause i'm having a rough time mustering it myself. i know that most of it is getting past the initial few days of working out again, and that's the part where i'm dragging my feet. i should've been motivated when m said to me, "mom, you haven't exercised in a long time. why don't you exercise anymore?" rad. good thing i'm modeling physical fitness to my kids. i guess at least they recognize that it's more normal for me to exercise than not.

two, any good dvd's i should attempt? you may remember i am a jillian michaels fan (at least i am a fan of her routines.) i kind of like intense, knock it out workouts, mostly because of limited time. (but not so intense that i die.)

my tummy fat thanks you in advance.

and on that note of sloth and complete inactivity, have a happy thanksgiving week of feasting!

ps yes i notice that i'm 6 posts behind...i've got some catching up to do! see you here a little more often in the next ten days!

  1. 1) you're hot
    2) one of the most common misconceptions that my clients had/have is an "all or nothing" attitude. example: "well, I just worked out for three days in a row and then I skipped one so I guess I'm a failure...might as well eat this entire cake." if you screw up, eating or exercising, who cares. get right back in it. I find that putting your workout clothes on will motivate you to do something active in them. just start with that and you'll get back into your routine!
    3) 20 minutes of exercise is better than nothing at all. don't make it seem so daunting. no one "likes" to exercise, but it will make you feel SO much better afterwards and you'll be energized to continue for longer periods of time. start small and work our way back up.
    4) working out is actually better for you when you're sick. it helps your body heal more quickly. next time, try it!
    5) hearts.

  2. I have a similar post in the wings (along with about 12 others I have yet to finish and post, ug). Motivation is my hardest thing and it waxes and wanes. I have my yoga mat and weights under the sofa where I see them all the time as a big ol' reminder. I put on my workout clothes before I put Luke down for nap so I don't have an excuse. I have been really intentional in focusing on why I exercise - for the endorphins and the way my mind feels (I tell Viv exercise is my time and it helps me be a better mommy) rather than getting rid of my (ever present) muffin top. I am SO loving Physique 57 workouts. I smile the entire time and feel energetic and content the rest of the day. (I've tried a couple other bar workouts and none compare.) You are super duper awesome and those endorphins will be the whipped cream and cherry on top of your awesomeness! xoxo

  3. Its always hard for me to get back to the gym and it can be really frustrating. On the days when I really just can't go, I remind myself that I'll fell good if I go instead of spending the rest of the night moping about the fact that I didn't. I hope that helps!

  5. I don't have any getting back on the wagon tips for you...but I do have some understanding. Over the spring and summer I was the best at exercise (even with some breaks and getting back to it), then I had some health stuff in early September, followed by a 2 week vacation (wherein I packed all my exercise gear...except the inhaler so I could breathe while doing it) and I have not been able to get myself back to it. A day on the exercise bike here and there, but nothing consistent. Maybe we need to make some sort of agreement to start up again....

  6. My only advice would be: get a friend or workout buddy. At least for the short term (even for just a week!) to help you get back on the wagon. Most folks are much less likely to blow off a workout if they have a friend meeting them at the gym / on the trail / whatever.

  7. well all of my wise friends, thanks for your comments & motivation! two days of exercise in a row, and i am feeling sore, but good- and remembering why i like moving. it's definitely not the during feeling, but the after feeling!

I see your title, "Blogger: good but hard " does appear to be spot on with what your website is about yet, I prefer to keep my title less content descriptive and based more around site branding. Would you think this is a good idea or bad idea? Any kind of help would be greatly valued.

it would produce any positive results. Thank you so much.
