go tell it on the mountain

i need some good christmas music.

i don't really like christmas music, but i feel like i should mix things up this year and at least try playing some here and there. (for those of you in my life who blast christmas music the second the turkey and stuffing are off of the table, please don't keel over in shock.)

so, what should i be listening to? besides the only christmas music i currently own: a burned sufjan stevens album and the over the rhine christmas cd that my friend holly sent me (after reading on an earlier post that i am all bah-humbug regarding the christmas muzak)

bring it in the comment section.

(and daphne? since you triple dog dared me via text message at 7 pm to get my 30 posts in? a. done and done. b. treats can be sent to my current address attention your favorite blogger. c. preferably sweet treats.)

happy december eve!
(and i'm serious about the christmas music)

  1. good timing. i was listening to Sarah McLachlan's Wintersong when I read this post. It was just given to me and I haven't made it the whole way through yet. But so far, so good. If you can procure it from someone in the states, you should. Otherwise, I could send it to you but it probably wouldn't get to you until mid-to-lateish December.

  2. also. over the rhine has an older holiday album called The Darkest Night of the Year. it's not nearly as sassy as Snow Angel, but still good. say the word and i can get it to you.

  6. i'm not going to pretend my christmas classics are pop culture awesomeness. but they are sentimental and totally put me in the spirit. thanks to my mother, i have to hear the peter paul and scary mary christmas concert at carnegie hall. right now i'm listening to michael w smith's old school 1989 christmas album (no haters, it's instrumental and beautiful). try pandora too. and didn't you have harry connick jr's 'christmas' album? AND i emailed heather olson for the basic's christmas album. i remember that being good...no response yet. and sixpence has a christmas album you'd probably like. i have more when you're ready...

  7. this is really nerdy, but my family always listens to manheim steamroller at christmas, it's instrumental and makes me happy.

  8. We always listen to this CD as soon as the Calendar flips to December:

I also love some of the older classics, like the Holly and the Ivy. And I love "Mary Did You Know?"

  9. i love that this post of all posts is getting so many comments. apparently i am in the minority on my lack of christmas-music-ing.

    holly-i'm saying the word.

amy-harry connick? uh, not me. maybe jan or larry or one of our other brief roommates.

  10. i am not a fan of christmas music at the moment because last year we had it on so much that it made my ears kind of ill...
but i would second holly's recommendations and can throw 'em in the mail to you in a hop skip and jump kinda way.

  12. This is the album I grew up listening to and it makes me dance-around-the-room happy:

In full disclosure, Phil Spector produced it in the 60's and he's now a convicted murderer, but I force myself to overlook that icky detail for the happiness that hearing this music brings me.

We also love "Rat Pack Christmas" - we're fans of the old-timey, grab a martini Christmas goodness around here.

  14. For a very fun and eclectic mix, including a story, I love "Christmas Songs." Not certain but I think the artists are all Canadian. Apparently they celebrate Christmas up north, too.

  16. I keep checking back to see what others have added to your list! I'll have to look into some of these. If you want something really cheesy-feel-good, there's always the Muppets Christmas album with John Denver. ("No, figgy pudding, it's made with figs. And bacon.")

  20. The John Watters Christmas mix is fun. There are a couple crass songs that should be skipped, but some real winners as well.
Also, Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown Christmas is pretty great.
